On the night of January 27, 1974, a severe gale hit the West coast. The MV Captayannis, moored at the Tail of the Bank with a cargo of sugar, began to drag anchor.

The anchor chain of the British Light, a 36,ooo ton tanker, ripped through the ship’s hull. The boat reached a sandbank but tipped over, settling port side down.

The sugar boat remains in the Firth of the Clyde, with the gentle curve of its hull rising above sea level as a landmark visible from Helensburgh and from the surrounding area.
